DIAMONDTM  DECKING

Architectural Specification Sheet

The material to be supplied must be Diamond Decking produced exclusively from Tabebuia serratifolia and in accordance

with source, production and grading guidelines set forth by Diamond Hardwoods, Inc.

Diamond Decking Architectural Specification Guidelines

Dimension Lumber:

Standard Diamond Decking items are specified using Nominal sizes and are dressed to Net dimensions utilizing the S4S

(surface four sides), E4E (eased four edges) process.

(Example:  A Rough Sawn 2" x 4" Nominal board is dressed (S4S, E4E) to the finished Net dimension of  1-1 /2" x 3-1/2")

Note: For standard Diamond Decking stock sizes, refer to the "Diamond Decking Stock Dimension Guide

Rough Sawn Lumber and Timber:

Custom order Rough Sawn Diamond Decking is specified using actual Net dimensions.

Diamond Decking Rail System:

Consists of two components, Cap Rail and Sub Rail.  See a cross section including overall dimensions in the

"Diamond Decking Tm Rail System Guide

Mechanical and Fire Resistance Properties of Diamond Decking

             Ultimate Strength Values                                (ASTM D-915)

             Bending Strength                                                      12,368 (psi)

Tension Parallel to Grain                                          10,600 (psi)

Compression Parallel to Grain                                  13,840 (psi)

Shear Parallel to Grain                                               11,434 (psi)

             Modulus of Elasticity                                          2,890,000 (psi)

             Surface Burning Characteristics                        (ASTM E-84)

Flame Spread Index (10 minutes)                                                  0

Flame Spread Index (30 minutes)                                                10

Smoke Developed Value (10 minutes)                                         5

The above values correlate with the following classifications:

NFPA (National Fire Protection Association)    Class A

UBC (Uniform Building Code)    Class 1

General Standards

A)      Moisture Content: Diamond Decking shall be graded and supplied: "Shipping dry" for Milled exterior

decking, and "Green" for Sawn custom order timber.

B)      All board comers shall be rounded (E4E), with a standard 3mm splinter resistant radius.

C)      All board ends shall be hammer branded with a diamond shaped grader mark.

D)      All board ends shall be sealed with a hygroscopic barrier to reduce end splits and checks.

E)      Milling and Sawing: All lumber shall be well sawn and planed to the dimension specified.  Ends shall be neatly trimmed and squared to length.

F)      Diamond Decking is supplied slightly over length.  For material cut to an exact length, specify "Precision End Trimmed"(PET.  PET tolerances: +/- 3mm.)

G)      All material must be functional in form and capable of being installed using conventional methods and tools.

H)     Some natural color variations are permitted in Diamond Decking, however, these differences represent graded tonal nuances and not the extreme contrast in colors found in mixed species shipments and unclassified generic ipe products.

Grade

Diamond Decking is suited for high quality work, where uniform strength and appearance is required.

Aesthetics Defects (Not Permitted)

Visual defects are graded on primary faces and include the following items:

a.     Excessive Torn or Raised Grain

b.     Permanent Stains

c.     Wane, Bark and Gum Pockets

d.     Common Knots

e.     Sapwood

f.     Worm Hole groups

g.    Planer Marks/Skips

h.     Excessive Checks

Mechanical Defects (Not Permitted)

Mechanical defects impairing structural strength are graded on all faces and include:

a.     Loose, decayed or hollow Knots

b.     Excessive Splits or Shake

c.     Slope of Grain (In excess of the maximum allowable ratio: 1: 8)

e.     Compression Checks

f.     Brittle Heart

g.    Insipient Decay

h.     Pith
